The red fez with a black tassel, the Shrine’s most distinctive symbol, has been handed down through the ages.
It derives its name from the place where it was first manufactured — the holy city of Fez, Morocco.
The fez was chosen as part of the Shrine’s Arabic (Near-Eastern) theme, around which the color and pageantry of the Shrine are developed.
In 1872 a group of 13 Freemasons created the fraternity known as the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. In 1922 they began construction on the first Shriners Hospital for Children. Today, the organization is known as Shriners International. The Shriners hospital system has grown to 22 hospitals in North America and has become known as the World’s Greatest Philanthropy.
